Tamando police in Bhubaneswar arrested a 35-year-old man on Sunday for allegedly stabbing a senior citizen following an altercation over an electricity bill.
The victim, who suffered severe injuries, is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
According to sources, complainant Nibasini Prusti lived with her elderly parents in a rented house at Patrapada, where the accused, Batakrushna Swain alias Rajesh (35), resided in an adjacent room. Tensions flared on Oct 8 around 9 PM over electricity bill sharing, leading Swain to verbally abuse and push the victim and his daughter. After a neighbour intervened, Swain issued death threats and fled.
On Oct 9 at around 5:30 AM, Swain ambushed the elderly victim near a local pond, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest, abdomen, and back. The knife blade remained lodged in the victim’s back as he was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in critical condition.
Following a tip-off, Tamando police apprehended Swain on Sunday afternoon from Bhagabanpur. Police recovered the bloodstained 4.6-inch folding knife and a broken 1.6-inch blade tip, formally arresting Swain and forwarding him to court.
