Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi have petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Passed with contentious votes in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the bill has sparked fierce opposition from various factions of the Muslim community and political leaders.

The bill, aimed at regulating Waqf properties, allegedly imposes “arbitrary restrictions” that some argue infringe upon the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. In separate petitions filed through legal advocates, Jawed and Owaisi claimed the bill violates constitutional rights and fundamental freedoms, urging the apex court to intervene.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh confirmed his party’s stance, stating that the legislation undermines principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The Congress plans to challenge the bill’s constitutionality, alleging discrimination against the Muslim community.

As the controversy unfolds, the Supreme Court’s decision on this matter is poised to be a pivotal moment for Indian legislative and constitutional dynamics.
