Sensex, Nifty Stage Technical Rebound After Multi-Year Lows, but Headwinds Persist

Indian benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50, opened higher on Friday, staging a technical rebound after a severe session of selling pushed the markets into deep oversold territory and down to multi-year lows.

GIFT Nifty futures traded at 22,379.5 early Friday morning, indicating a positive opening stance for the Nifty 50 following Thursday’s closing level of 22,231.80. In the preceding session, intense market capitulation dragged the Sensex down to its lowest point in 32 months, while the Nifty slipped to an 18-month low.

What Drove the Market Bloodbath?

Thursday’s dramatic selloff stemmed from a confluence of macroeconomic pressures:

  • Hawkish Central Bank Stance: The Reserve Bank of India’s recent rate hike heightened investor fears over tighter monetary policy and sustained high borrowing costs.
  • Energy Shock: Brent crude surged over 4% to hover near $104 per barrel, fueled by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and supply concerns tied to an approaching hurricane near the US Gulf Coast.
  • Foreign Capital Flight: Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out a massive net ₹1,29,440 crore ($1.3 billion) in a single session—marking the largest daily single-day outflow since late May 2026. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) cushioned the crash by absorbing ₹1,07,030 crore worth of equities.
  • Currency & Yield Pressure: Rising global bond yields and a depreciating Indian Rupee further drained domestic risk appetite.

Recovery Caps: IT Sector Concerns & US Policy

Analysts caution that any upward momentum during Friday’s session could face strong resistance. A surge in global crude prices continues to threaten India’s import bill and inflation trajectory. Additionally, fresh regulatory scrutiny from the United States targeting green-card programs—widely utilized by Indian IT outsourcing vendors—has cast a shadow over market heavyweights.

Earnings worries are also adding pressure on tech stocks. Market leader Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported its sluggish0est September-quarter revenue growth in three years, reflecting muted enterprise spending and sluggish global demand.

While technical indicators suggest a short-term bounce following the extreme selloff, analysts maintain that a sustained market recovery will require cooling crude prices, stabilization in foreign capital flows, and clarity on global trade policy.
