Tensions have flared significantly in Ward No. 37 under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) following an indefinite hunger strike launched by local BJP Corporator Bandita Pal.

The fast unto death, staged on government land (Plot No. 892), marks a drastic escalation in local unrest after a seven-day mass demonstration failed to yield a response from civic authorities regarding long-pending infrastructure demands.

Corporator Bandita Pal and local residents are demanding immediate approval for the construction of three key public amenities: A dedicated Ward Office; a Senior Citizen Home; aA Mahila Samiti (Women’s Association) Building.

Pal declared that her hunger strike will continue unabated until the General Administration (GA) Department issues formal construction permissions for the site.

At the heart of the conflict is a strong sense of grievance among residents, who accuse the municipal administration of prioritizing private real estate interests over public convenience.

According to the protester’s allegations:

  • Plot No. 892, a government-owned parcel of land, was previously cleared of private builder encroachments and earmarked for public utility construction.
  • A government boundary wall was subsequently demolished to allocate parking space to a private developer, an act allegedly facilitated with the backing of a senior BMC official.
  • Although public pressure forced the administration to suspend the parking permit, no formal legal action has been taken against the builder, further fueling public indignation.

The administration’s perceived indifference has mobilized widespread community support. Hundreds of local residents, including women who joined the vigil beneath the protest tent, participated in a massive foot rally (Padayatra) and procession (Sobhayatra). Protesters burned effigies to voice anger over unfulfilled mayoral election promises and demanded immediate administrative accountability.

With public participation mounting and residents demonstrating firm solidarity behind the corporator’s demands, the ongoing standoff presents a growing administrative challenge for the BMC and state authorities.
