The makers of the recently released mythological drama Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha are crying foul over the film’s poor box-office performance.
Released in theatres on Sept 25, the Abhishek Singh directorial struggled to attract audiences, netting a meagre worldwide collection of roughly Rs 46 lakh amid widespread pre-release backlash over its casting and VFX.
According to sources, producer Prakash Mahobiya alleged that the film’s commercial failure was largely engineered by a systematic, external smear campaign.
Mahobiya claimed that malicious narratives were actively distributed among online influencers and content creators to turn public opinion against the film.
“It was negative marketing throughout. We never got a chance to reach our audience,” Mahobiya stated. “The ones who watched our film really enjoyed it. But if they never got to see it, how will they even have an opinion?”
When questioned whether he was pointing fingers at the makers of upcoming high-profile adaptations—such as Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra’s multi-crore epic Ramayana starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash—Mahobiya admitted he lacked definitive proof, but noted that industry rumours pointed toward an effort to clear the path for larger-budget projects on the same subject.
Despite the heavy social media trolling—which ranged from scrutiny over Anjali Arora’s casting as Sita to viral gaffes like a member of the Vanar Sena sporting spectacles—the team remains confident in the film’s core content.
Encouraged by positive feedback from viewers who actually watched it, the makers have officially announced plans to re-release the film, hoping to give it a fair second chance at the box office.
