Commuters and emergency services were brought to a grinding halt along Gurugram’s busy Sohna Road on Monday afternoon after an unannounced student protest triggered a massive traffic jam spanning nearly three kilometres.
The gridlock left an emergency ambulance stranded for over 40 minutes as bumper-to-bumper traffic blocked every viable route.
Paramedics, drivers, and stranded motorists looked on helplessly as cars, heavy commercial vehicles, and two-wheelers packed every inch of the stretch. Desperate two-wheeler riders attempting to manoeuvre along narrow footpath edges ended up causing additional blockages across multiple lanes.
The impact of the bottleneck cascaded rapidly through major arterial connections in the city. The traffic flow was choked from the busy Rajiv Chowk underpass and junction past Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, extending all the way to Civil Lines and the District and Sessions Court.
Commuters reported remaining immobile inside underpasses for extended periods amidst heavy fumes and continuous blaring horns. Spot checks revealed bumper-to-bumper traffic persisting for over two to three hours.
According to Gurugram Traffic Police, the disruption was triggered by a group of students who staged an unannounced sit-in outside the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) office over ongoing admission issues.
Gurugram Traffic Police spokesperson Vikas Verma stated that teams were immediately deployed on the ground to manage the situation and initiate diversions to ease congestion.
It took personnel nearly three hours of continuous regulation and rerouting to dismantle the bottleneck and gradually restore normal vehicular movement across the affected stretches.
