A PhD research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he had been undergoing treatment since mid-August.

The student was originally found unconscious and severely injured on August 18 at his rented accommodation in South Delhi’s Munirka Village. Following a complaint by the Security Officer of IIT Delhi and directions from the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Kishangarh Police Station.

Incident Summary and Police Findings

  • Discovery at Residence: Neighbors knocked on the student’s room door after receiving no response throughout the day on August 18. Finding the door locked from the inside, they forced it open and discovered the scholar lying unconscious with severe injuries.
  • Medical Timeline: Police immediately transported the student to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. He remained critical for over 45 days before succumbing to his injuries on October 3.
  • No Campus Incident: Police clarified that the incident occurred off-campus at the scholar’s rented accommodation in Munirka.
  • Preliminary Evidence: CCTV footage retrieved from the entrance of the house confirmed that no other individuals entered or left the room, indicating the scholar was alone. Neither family members nor witnesses have raised allegations against any person so far.

Patterns of Concern at IIT Delhi

This tragic incident marks the third suicide-related death connected to IIT Delhi within the year.

  • August 22, 2026: A 31-year-old M.Sc Physics student died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex inside the campus.
  • March 2026: A 19-year-old first-year B.Tech student died allegedly by suicide inside his hostel room.

Official Statement & Ongoing Investigation

The Delhi Police confirmed that the abetment of suicide case was registered to ensure a thorough legal investigation under court directions. Further forensic reports, CCTV analysis, and witness statements are being collected by the Kishangarh police station to ascertain the full context leading to the tragedy.
