A 73-year-old cancer patient from New Alipore, Kolkata, fell victim to a scam amounting to Rs 49 lakh.
The perpetrators, two brothers from Odisha’s Rourkela, posed as officials and threatened her with legal repercussions unless she paid the hefty sum.
The victim, Mala Goswami, was coerced into transferring the amount via RTGS after the fraudsters falsely claimed that a parcel in her name contained sensitive documents and foreign currency. Fearing arrest, she complied with their demands.
Concerned by her isolation, her son in Bengaluru raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to intervene and take her to the police. Following an intense investigation, Kolkata Police tracked down and arrested 19-year-old Chandra Prakash Tulsian in Rourkela. His elder brother, Shivam, remains at large.
Chandra Prakash was presented in court, where he was granted bail with strict conditions, including a daily check-in at the police station. Authorities are continuing their search for Shivam as they work to bring closure to the case.
