After a long and anticipated wait of 46 years, a historic chapter in student democracy is finally unfolding at the Adivasi College in Baliguda.
For the first time since its establishment in 1979, the institution is holding its student union elections, following key directives from the Higher Education Department.
For decades, the absence of student elections meant that the democratic rights and leadership development opportunities for students remained limited. While neighbouring institutions in the Kandhamal district—such as Phulbani Government College and Udayagiri Kalinga College—regularly conducted student polls, Adivasi College remained an exception. The announcement has now brought a wave of unmatched excitement, enthusiasm, and curiosity across the campus.
Election Process and Schedule
According to the college administration, eligible students across Arts, Commerce, and Science streams (+3 First, Second, and Third Year) are qualified to contest various posts within the student union.
-
Nomination Distribution: Nomination papers are available in person at the old SAMS room starting October 8 during regular working hours.
-
Help Desk: For queries or assistance, students can reach out to the election officials between 10 AM and 5 PM.
The college has appointed English Lecturer Tejeshwar Nayak as the Election Officer, alongside Commerce Lecturer Saroj Kumar Pathi and Zoology Lecturer Himanshu Sekhar Sahu as Assistant Election Officers.
Administration and Student Cooperation
Principal Dr Bibhuti Bhushan Acharya confirmed that comprehensive preparations are underway following the election announcement. To ensure complete safety, peace, and order during the polls, the college administration has sought collaborative support from the local Sub-Collector and police authorities. Meanwhile, students have come together to pledge their support for a peaceful, disciplined, and smooth electoral process.
More than just a race for positions, this maiden election after 46 years marks the true birth of student representation, democratic values, and leadership legacy at Baliguda Adivasi College.
