Three police personnel from Balichandrapur Police Station in Jajpur district were suspended following allegations of custodial torture that led a youth to attempt suicide.
Rabindra Mallik, 28, from Mahipur village under Anaka panchayat, consumed poison after reportedly being subjected to third-degree torture while in police custody. He had been detained for questioning in connection with a family dispute. According to his statement, he was beaten mercilessly and stripped naked by the officers, prompting his drastic action.
Following an inquiry led by SDPO Lakshidhar Swain under the directive of Jajpur SP Yash Pratap Srimal, Sub Inspector Chinamaya Prusti, ASI Durgesh Nandini Dey, and constable Debendra Banara were suspended.
Rabindra was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in critical condition and was released on bail after his recovery. His family accused the police of failing to inform them about his detention or hospitalisation, and learning of his condition only three days later.
The incident stems from a violent altercation on August 3, when Rabindra’s cousin allegedly attacked his disabled father and a neighbour with a sword. Rabindra intervened by throwing hot rice gruel at the attacker, which led to his detention.
