The Parliament of India is ready to welcome global parliamentary leaders as it hosts the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum starting October 26, 2026.
Running through October 27, the prestigious two-day event at the Parliament House Complex will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is set to meet visiting delegation leaders.
Operating under the overarching theme “Strengthening Parliaments for People-Centric Development,” the forum aims to drive consensus-based dialogue across four core high-level sessions focused on Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.
High-Level Bilateral Talks Set the Stage
Ahead of the grand inauguration, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held intensive and productive bilateral meetings with several visiting international delegations, prominently featuring a high-level meeting with the Russian parliamentary delegation led by H.E. Mr Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma.
Reflecting on the time-tested partnership between New Delhi and Moscow—which approaches 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2027—Shri Birla underscored the importance of sustained institutional engagement between the Lok Sabha and the State Duma. Both leaders emphasised expanding exchanges between young and women parliamentarians, alongside bolstering cooperation in trade, industry, nuclear energy, and cultural spheres.
During the discussions, Shri Birla expressed deep appreciation for Russia’s consistent backing of India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The delegations also shared a unified stance on combating global terrorism, asserting that the international community must show collective resolve and unity to dismantle terror networks. Furthermore, Shri Birla highlighted India’s pioneering technological strides, such as Sansad Bhashini, designed to make parliamentary proceedings more inclusive and citizen-centric.
Broad International Engagement
In addition to the Russian delegation, Speaker Om Birla engaged in fruitful diplomatic discussions with parliamentary delegations from Cuba, Egypt, and Belarus, reinforcing India’s commitment to multilateralism and South-South cooperation.
As part of the summit’s diverse itinerary, a special meeting of the Chairpersons of the International Affairs Committees from BRICS member and partner countries will convene to discuss parliamentary diplomacy and capacity-building best practices. The high-level proceedings will also be complemented by cultural showcases and a grand banquet hosted by the Vice-President of India, setting a collaborative tone for India’s dynamic 2026 BRICS Presidency.
