A 12-year-old girl from Champagada Sahi under Balanga police limits in Puri district died after a severe lice infestation spread to her scalp and caused a fatal infection.
The deceased, identified as Lakshmi Priya Sahu, daughter of Lingaraj Sahu and a Class-VI student, had been suffering from lice for several months. Despite her mother’s advice to shave her head, Lakshmi refused. The infestation worsened, damaging her scalp and leading to a serious infection.
Family members reported that Lakshmi stopped stepping out of the house due to the foul smell from her head. Three days ago, she began vomiting blood and was rushed to Puri District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors attempted treatment, but she succumbed while undergoing care.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with volunteers questioning parental negligence and highlighting the importance of timely medical attention.
