A young man was allegedly assaulted by a group of local activists after being suspected of being a Bangladeshi national near AIIMS Bhubaneswar, triggering concerns over mob justice and public safety.

According to preliminary information, the youth was seen moving around the area in a suspicious manner while carrying utensils. Members of a local organisation reportedly detained him, questioned his identity, and allegedly physically assaulted him based on suspicion of his nationality.

Following the incident, Khandagiri Police reached the spot, rescued the injured youth, and brought him to the police station for further inquiry. Police officials said the individual has been asked to provide identity documents, including an Aadhaar card, to establish his Indian citizenship.

After being informed of the requirement, the youth contacted his family members. Police confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation and that the individual remains in safe custody while verification is underway.

Video Sparks Public Concern

A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and raising serious questions about people taking the law into their own hands. The incident has also sparked debate amid heightened tensions following reports of attacks on Indian citizens in Bangladesh, which some believe may have influenced public reactions.

Police officials stated that the youth’s identity and background are being verified, and assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of assault or unlawful detention.

Police Warn Against Vigilantism

Authorities have reiterated that suspicions related to identity or nationality must be reported to law enforcement, and warned that vigilantism and mob violence are serious offences under the law.

The investigation is ongoing.
