Cuttack: Tension prevailed near Mahavir Basti at Krushak Bazaar in Cuttack after a woman died after being hit by a speeding motorcycle. The deceased woman has been identified as Shantilata Nayak (35), wife of Bijay Nayak.
According to sources, the couple works as masons and have two kids—an 11-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son, who study in a government school in Markat Nagar Sector-7.
After returning from work, Shantilata was en route to school to fetch her children when a motorcyclist hit her from behind on Petanal Street near her house. Shantilata sustained a deep injury on her head and collapsed on the spot due to profuse bleeding.
In the meanwhile, the locals caught hold of the biker, who was trying to escape, soon after the accident and gave him a sound thrashing.
Later, the Bidanasi police reached the spot and sent the accident victim to the hospital. But the doctor declared her dead.
Reportedly, the police have detained the motorcyclist, identified as Baya, a resident of the Alishabazar area.
