The serene waters of Chilika Lake came alive on the second day of the 6th National Chilika Bird Festival, blending the tranquillity of birdwatching with the excitement of traditional boat racing.

Organised jointly by Odisha’s Department of Tourism and the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, the event underscored the state’s commitment to conservation-led tourism, drawing enthusiasts from across the country to celebrate nature, culture, and community.

Guided birding trails at Mangalajodi and Nalabana Bird Sanctuary were the highlights for nature lovers. Participants, including wildlife experts, photographers, students, and avid birders, embarked on immersive experiences to spot migratory and resident species in one of India’s premier wetland ecosystems. The day also featured a competitive Bird Race, organised by the eBird team, where teams raced against time to log the most bird sightings, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry amid the calls of flamingos, herons, and pelicans.

Meanwhile, at OTDC Barkul, the Chilika Country Boat Race added a dash of adrenaline to the festivities. A whopping 74 teams from local communities participated in the traditional event, showcasing skilful navigation and teamwork on the lake’s expansive waters. After intense heats, 42 teams advanced to the semi-finals and finals, with spectators cheering from the shores as oars sliced through the waves, highlighting the deep cultural ties between Odisha’s people and their natural heritage.

Chilika Bird Festival Day 2

This convergence of conservation, culture, and competition not only promotes eco-tourism but also engages local communities in protecting Chilika’s biodiversity. As Odisha continues to position itself as a hub for sustainable travel, events like this festival play a crucial role in raising awareness about wetland preservation.

Looking ahead, Day 3 promises even more engagement with additional birding activities, capacity-building workshops for boatmen on eco-friendly practices, expert panel discussions on wildlife conservation, and vibrant cultural performances, including the graceful Odissi dance. The day will culminate in an award ceremony honouring outstanding contributions to birding and conservation.

The 6th National Chilika Bird Festival runs through the week, inviting all to experience the magic of Odisha’s natural wonders.
