Taylor Fritz has soared into the Wimbledon 2025 quarter-finals after Australian Jordan Thompson retired mid-match due to a back injury.
The American fifth seed was leading 6–1, 3–0 on No. 1 Court when Thompson, heavily strapped and visibly struggling, called it quits, bringing the encounter to an early close.
Fritz’s campaign at SW19 has been nothing short of resilient. Coming off the momentum of a record fourth Eastbourne title, he battled through nearly ten hours on court across the first three rounds, prevailing over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo in gruelling five-setters, followed by a four-set win against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
“It’s not the way I wanted to advance,” Fritz said post-match, extending empathy toward Thompson. “He’s been grinding out five-set matches and even played doubles yesterday. Massive respect to him for showing up despite the physical toll.”
Thompson, World No. 44, was making his first fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon and had stunned fans by playing through injury in earlier matches, including a dramatic win over Luciano Darderi. However, the rigours proved too great in the face of Fritz’s aggressive baseline play and sharp service game.
Fritz will next face Russia’s Karen Khachanov, who dismantled Kamil Majchrzak 6–4, 6–2, 6–3 in a clinical display. Khachanov, with an 8–2 grass court record this season and a prior quarter-final at Wimbledon in 2021, promises to be a formidable hurdle.
Currently ranked No. 12 in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, Fritz eyes a top 10 finish to qualify for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals, where he reached the title match last season.
