Goa’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has clarified that the state government has no plans to ban beef, affirming that culinary freedom and communal harmony remain integral to Goa’s identity and tourism appeal.
Amid speculation that the state’s push toward spiritual tourism might lead to dietary restrictions, Khaunte said Goa continues to uphold its inclusive culture and diverse food choices.
“We live in the form of communal harmony. Whether it is Diwali, Chaturthi, or Christmas, we visit each other’s homes and enjoy each other’s cuisine the way we want to,” he said, addressing a media query.
Khaunte emphasised that the government respects every community’s sentiments and traditions. “There is no question of imposing any food restrictions unless the media creates such perceptions,” he remarked.
The minister also assured tourists that Goa will not impose dietary limitations, reiterating that the state’s approach is to offer choices, not restrictions.
“As part of the government of Goa, promoting tourism, I want every tourist to enjoy freely. There is no ban on anything. You can eat what you want and enjoy — jo khana hai, khao, maza karo,” Khaunte said.
Highlighting India’s deep-rooted hospitality ethos, he added:
“Take back fond memories. That is why we say Atithi Devo Bhava (the guest is God) and Seva Devo Bhava (service is God).”
Khaunte reaffirmed that Goa’s inclusive and welcoming spirit—enriched by its multi-cultural festivals and diverse cuisine—will continue to define its global tourism appeal even as the state positions itself as a spiritual tourism hub, or “Dakshin Ka Kashi.”
