Five rescued baby orangutans, believed to be native to Indonesia’s Borneo region, are currently under strict quarantine and medical observation at Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park after being rescued from a forest in the Baleshwar district.
According to Nandankanan Deputy Director Pradeep Mirase, initial health screenings conducted after their arrival on Tuesday night revealed that four of the primates are in good health, while one is being treated for a fever.
Odisha Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia stated that department veterinarians are closely monitoring the animals. “If required in the coming days, we will bring in expert doctors from national wildlife authorities and involve them in capacity building for our medical team,” the minister added. Authorities are continuing to investigate how the exotic apes were brought into the state’s forests.
