The West Indies posted a commanding 195/4 against India in a high-stakes Super 8 encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday in Kolkata, setting up a challenging 196-run target for the Men in Blue.
After winning the toss, India captain Suryakumar Yadav opted to field first. However, the West Indies batting unit capitalised on strong partnerships and a powerful finish to put up a formidable total.
Late Onslaught Shifts Momentum
The Caribbean side were placed at 125/4 after 15 overs, with India clawing their way back into the contest through timely wickets. But a brutal death-overs assault turned the tide decisively.
Jason Holder (37*) and Rovman Powell (34*) stitched together a match-defining 76-run stand off just 35 balls for the fifth wicket. The duo hammered 70 runs in the final five overs, lifting West Indies to 195/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
Earlier, Roston Chase and Shai Hope laid a solid foundation with a 68-run opening partnership after Brandon King was ruled out.
India’s Bowling Effort
For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets in his four overs. Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy chipped in with one wicket each.
However, India’s fielding lapses—including two dropped catches—proved costly in a match where margins are thin. The 70-run surge in the death overs significantly raised the pressure ahead of the chase.
