Italy is witnessing widespread unrest as violent protests erupted across major cities in response to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s refusal to recognize Palestinian statehood.
The demonstrations, sparked by Italy’s divergence from other Western nations that recently acknowledged Palestine, have led to clashes with police, disruptions in public services, and mounting political pressure.
In Milan, hundreds of pro-Palestine demonstrators stormed the central train station, armed with sticks and smoke bombs. The protest quickly escalated into chaos, with fires, vandalism, and damage to government buildings reported. Train services were suspended, and ports were closed as a precaution.
Rome and Naples also saw intense demonstrations, with protesters blocking roads and railway stations. Police deployed water cannons to disperse crowds, and over 60 officers were injured in the confrontations. Ten protesters were detained amid the escalating violence.
Despite mounting pressure, Meloni has remained firm in her stance, stating that her government will not alter its position under protest. Her decision stands in contrast to countries like France, the UK, Canada, and Australia, which have formally recognized Palestine in recent days.
The protests reflect growing public demand for solidarity with Gaza and a call for Italy to align with the global shift toward Palestinian recognition.
