Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi will miss the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy after skipping Bihar’s match against Manipur on Friday, his coach confirmed. The 14-year-old cricketer has travelled to New Delhi to attend the Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award ceremony, where he will be honoured for his exceptional achievements.
Suryavanshi’s childhood coach Manish Ojha said the young batter had prior commitments in the national capital and would not be available for the rest of the domestic tournament.
“Vaibhav will not play today’s match as he is in Delhi to attend the Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award ceremony. He had to report early in the morning for the event,” Ojha said.
National Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan
The award ceremony will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to felicitate the awardees. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to interact with the children being honoured.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) is India’s highest civilian award for children aged 5 to 18, recognising excellence in fields such as sports, bravery, innovation, science and technology, social service, and art and culture.
Focus Shifts to U19 World Cup Preparation
Following the ceremony, Suryavanshi is expected to rejoin the India Under-19 squad and travel to Zimbabwe as part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming U19 World Cup, which begins on January 15.
“He will miss the rest of the Vijay Hazare Trophy as he needs to get in sync with the Under-19 World Cup squad and participate in preparatory matches,” Ojha added.
Record-Breaking Run in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Suryavanshi recently grabbed national attention with a stunning 190 off just 84 balls against Arunachal Pradesh, helping Bihar post a world-record 574/6 in 50 overs. His innings included 16 fours and 15 sixes, and he reached his century in just 36 balls.
With that knock, Suryavanshi became the youngest centurion in List A cricket history. He also surpassed AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest 150 in List A cricket and hit the most sixes by an Indian in a List A innings.
Rapid Rise in Indian Cricket
Earlier this year, Suryavanshi made headlines with his performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he scored the fastest century by an Indian, reaching the milestone in 35 balls.
Despite a mixed outing in the U19 Asia Cup, the young left-hander remains one of India’s most promising cricketing talents, with selectors closely monitoring his progress ahead of the global tournament.
