Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar expelled drama department lecturer Shatrughna Samal after multiple female students accused him of harassment.
The decision followed written complaints submitted to the college authorities and the State Culture Department.
Principal Bijay Jena confirmed the expulsion and stated that the action was taken after authorities received formal complaints. Police detained Samal for questioning and initiated legal proceedings.
The incident triggered widespread protests on campus. Students marched on the streets, blocked roads, and staged demonstrations demanding strict action. Tension gripped the college premises as the agitation grew, forcing authorities to step in to restore order.
One protesting student fell ill during the demonstration and was shifted to a medical facility. Despite the unrest, students continued their protest, insisting that the administration must ensure safety and accountability.
The allegations included claims of inappropriate gestures and casting couch behaviour. Students said the harassment created an unsafe environment in the drama department. The State Culture Department confirmed that Samal’s expulsion was immediate and final.
Police stated that they are investigating the matter thoroughly. Officials assured that legal action will follow based on the evidence and complaints received.
