External affairs minister S Jaishankar met US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss the growing India-US partnership and its strategic global significance.
The meeting comes as Gor begins his six-day visit to India following his confirmation by the US Senate.
Jaishankar shared details of the meeting on X, writing, “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility.”
Gor is accompanied by Michael J. Rigas, the US deputy secretary for management and resources, during his October 9–14 visit, according to the US State Department. The discussions come at a crucial time as both nations work to strengthen cooperation in defence, trade, and emerging technologies, and explore pathways to finalise a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement.
The US Embassy in New Delhi confirmed that Gor will formally present his credentials at a later date. Earlier in the day, foreign secretary Vikram Misri also met Gor for what was described as a “productive exchange” on advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
In a post on X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met US Ambassador-designate to India @SergioGor earlier today. They had a productive exchange on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities. FS wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment.”
Jaishankar and Gor had previously met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 24. During that meeting, both sides discussed deepening the strategic and economic dimensions of the relationship.
Following that discussion, the US State Department posted, “US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador Nominee to India Sergio Gor met with India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on the margins of the UNGA. They look forward to further promoting the success of the US-India relationship.”
During his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor described India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He highlighted India’s geographic position, economic growth, and defence capabilities as key pillars for ensuring regional stability and advancing shared prosperity.
Gor’s appointment reflects Washington’s renewed commitment to strengthen ties with New Delhi amid evolving global geopolitical shifts. It also follows efforts to recalibrate trade relations after the high tariff measures imposed during Donald Trump’s administration.
