An Odia medical student from Balasore was gang-raped near her private college campus in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Friday night.
The second-year student from Jaleswar, Balasore, had gone out for dinner with a male friend when the attackers intercepted them near the campus gate.
They assaulted her friend and dragged her into a nearby forested area. After committing the crime, they stole her phone and demanded money to return it. Her friends alerted her parents, who reached Durgapur on Saturday morning.
Police confirmed the incident occurred between 8:30 and 9 PM outside the college campus. They admitted the student to a nearby hospital, where she remains under treatment. Investigators recorded her statement and deployed forensic teams to collect evidence.
Officers have not yet identified or arrested any suspects. They are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning college staff and the victim’s companion.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) sent a team to meet the victim and her family. NCW member Archana Majumdar condemned the rising crimes against women in West Bengal and urged the Chief Minister to take decisive action.
The State Health Department demanded a report from the college administration. Officials assured that they would take appropriate steps based on the findings.
The medical student gang-rape triggered widespread outrage across Odisha and West Bengal. Citizens and activists demanded swift justice and stronger campus safety measures.
