The United Arab Emirates has conferred its prestigious First Class Order of Zayed II upon Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and the crew members of flydubai.
The high civil honour was awarded for their decisive actions in neutralising a dangerous mid-air emergency and ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, personally received the heroic crew to express the nation’s profound gratitude.
The formal decorations were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.
An Act of Selfless Courage Above the Clouds
The dramatic incident occurred on September 30 during a flight when Captain Machchhar was severely injured during a violent cockpit assault. Despite sustaining head injuries and facing rapid disorientation, Captain Machchhar summoned his remaining strength to activate the cockpit door release mechanism.
His selfless decision enabled off-duty crew members and alert passengers to intervene, subdue the attacker, and assist the flight crew in bringing the aircraft to a safe emergency landing.
Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan had previously visited Captain Machchhar on October 3 while he was undergoing medical treatment in the UAE. Praising his composure and sense of duty, Sheikh Hamdan remarked that Machchhar exemplified “the highest degrees of courage, responsibility, and care for human life,” calling him a proud part of the UAE’s national story.
Worldwide Acclaim for a Global Hero
Captain Machchhar’s quick action has drawn admiration from international leaders across the globe:
-
India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Machchhar as a hero whose bravery brought pride to the nation.
-
Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised his valour, with Israel additionally announcing a civilian bravery award to be conferred upon his full recovery.
-
United States: US President Donald Trump commended Captain Machchhar for his decisive act in opening the cockpit door while severely injured.
Accepting the First Class Order of Zayed II, Captain Machchhar and the flydubai crew expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the UAE leadership, stating that safeguarding lives remains the highest priority of their aviation calling.
