A tragic accident occurred today near the Tarini Temple in Malkangiri when two workers lost their lives while digging soil illegally at a local stone quarry.

Witnesses reported that stones fell during morrum excavation, killing one worker, Tuna Gadaba of Satyamguda village (Ward No. 8), on the spot. Another worker, Mitu Madhi of Champakhari village, was critically injured and rushed to Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Mitu succumbed to his injuries. Malkangiri Police Station Officer Regan Kindo confirmed the deaths.

Following the accident, the tractor driver and other workers fled the site. Local residents and social activist J. Srinivas Rao reached the quarry, rescued the trapped workers, and informed the police.

Both deceased workers belonged to poor families and earned their livelihood through small jobs. Tuna and Mitu leave behind wives and young daughters, making their deaths a devastating blow to their households.

Community members and social activists have urged the administration to provide immediate financial assistance to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, police have begun an investigation into the incident.
