A transgender person was stabbed to death near Uttara Chhak on NH 316 under Pipili police limits, sparking outrage and fear among the community.
The victim, identified as Anjali alias Sona from Salepur, had recently joined the transgender group in Bhubaneswar. On Sunday night, around 9 pm, two bike-borne youths intercepted her near the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA). A heated argument broke out, and the attackers stabbed her multiple times. Eyewitnesses reported that Sona tried to escape, but the assailants chased and continued stabbing until she collapsed.
Despite regaining consciousness briefly, Sona informed her associates about the attack. Her companions rushed her to Capital Hospital, but doctors declared her dead. The brutal killing has triggered anger and anxiety among transgender groups in Bhubaneswar.
Dhauli police reached the spot immediately after receiving information. Investigators suspect past enmity as a possible motive since Sona had shifted to Uttara only two days earlier. Police are scanning CCTV footage from the CIFA area and nearby locations to identify the culprits. They also seized her mobile phone and are analysing call records to trace leads.
The transgender community has condemned the attack and demanded swift justice.
