Toxic trailer review: Yash’s star power struggles to rescue a chaotic, shock-driven preview

The Toxic trailer promises violence, spectacle and a larger-than-life Yash. But beneath the blood-soaked action and flashy visuals, the four-minute preview feels surprisingly unclear. Instead of building curiosity about the story, it appears more interested in shocking viewers.

Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic stars Yash alongside Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth and Tara Sutaria. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on August 26.

Toxic trailer review: What does the film want to say?

A trailer does not have to reveal a film’s entire story. In fact, keeping the plot mysterious can often make a preview more exciting. However, the Toxic trailer struggles to turn its mystery into genuine curiosity.

The preview jumps between violent action, dramatic confrontations and striking character moments. The editing keeps things non-linear, but the result feels more confusing than intriguing.

The trailer also appears to borrow familiar elements from Yash’s KGF, Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal and other mass-action films. The combination creates a visually loud package, but the individual sequences do not always feel connected.

The action is certainly designed to grab attention. Yet shock value alone may not be enough to convince audiences to watch the film.

Yash gets a striking new look

Yash remains the biggest attraction of the Toxic trailer. His intense screen presence dominates almost every sequence.

One of the most talked-about moments is the face-off involving two versions of Yash. His younger, clean-shaven appearance also stands out and offers a different look from the rugged image audiences associate with him.

The actor’s popularity is likely to give Toxic a strong opening. However, star power can only take a film so far. The story and characters ultimately need to give audiences a reason to stay invested.

Kiara Advani and Nayanthara add intrigue

Kiara Advani appears in a striking role as Nadia, a circus performer. Her character looks unpredictable and adds another layer to the trailer.

Nayanthara also makes an impression, although the trailer does not reveal enough about her character.

These moments suggest that Toxic could have more going on beneath its action-heavy surface. Unfortunately, the trailer moves so quickly that these potentially interesting characters do not get enough space to make a lasting impact.

Is ragebait still an effective marketing strategy?

One of the most noticeable aspects of the Toxic trailer is its reliance on shock value.

The strategy appears designed to generate strong reactions online. Controversial visuals and aggressive action can certainly make people talk about a film. But creating conversation is different from creating genuine excitement.

The approach may remind viewers of Animal, which also generated considerable discussion through its provocative marketing. However, Animal also benefited from tightly constructed trailer editing and a clear sense of its central character.

Toxic seems to borrow some of that shock-driven approach without offering the same clarity.

Can Yash’s stardom carry Toxic?

Yash’s popularity across India gives Toxic a major advantage. His performance and screen presence are likely to attract audiences, particularly fans of his previous action films.

However, recent releases have shown that star power alone does not guarantee long-term success. A big opening can come from an actor’s popularity, but word-of-mouth ultimately depends on the film itself.

That makes the actual story of Toxic even more important.

The trailer suggests that the makers are aiming for spectacle, violence and larger-than-life entertainment. Whether those elements come together effectively will only become clear when the full film reaches theatres.

Toxic trailer verdict

The Toxic trailer has plenty of eye-catching moments, but it does not yet offer a convincing sense of what makes the film different.

Yash looks commanding, the action is ambitious and several characters appear intriguing. Yet the trailer feels overloaded and lacks a clear narrative thread.

It is too early to judge the entire film based on its trailer. Toxic could still surprise audiences if the full story has more depth than the preview suggests.

For now, though, the trailer leaves one major question unanswered: can Yash’s star power, intense action and visual spectacle deliver a film with enough substance to match the hype?

Toxic, directed by Geetu Mohandas and starring Yash, Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth and Tara Sutaria, is scheduled to release in theatres on August 26.*
