Tokyo: World No 1 para shuttler Pramod Bhagat again proved his position as he clinched the gold medal after defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell by 2-0 in the men’s singles SL3 — final match at the Tokyo Paralympics on Saturday.
He bagged the first gold medal for the country in badminton at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Battling it out on Court 1, the first-seed Indian overwhelmed the second-seed Daniel Bethell in straight sets by 21-14 and 21-17 in 45 minutes.
After completing the remarkable win in straight games, Bhagat raced towards his coach and embraced him by the courtside as the television cameras were panned on India’s history maker.
India’s medal tally now stands at 17 at these Paralympics. It has won four golds, seven silvers, and six bronze medals. This is India’s best tally at a single edition of the Para Games. It had won four medals at Rio 2016 and four at the 1984 Paralympics.
