New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met up with the Thomas Cup winning contingent on Sunday and interacted with the squad, which also included players from the women’s Uber Cup team.
Speaking to the Indian badminton team, Modi said that India were able to hoist their flag in the competition after decades and it was not a small achievement.
He congratulated the team for their efforts and said that the country earlier never cared for these tournaments, but thanks to this team, the Thomas Cup win the country took notice of this team and the sport – badminton.
PM Modi was the first one to call the badminton team after their historic win in the Thomas Cup final, a footage that the players had shared right after their victory.
He congratulated Kidambi Srikanth specifically mentioning that it was quite commendable that the 29-year-old had shouldered India in his final game in the championship under huge pressure.
India completed their historic Thomas Cup campaign by defeating Indonesia by a margin of 3-0 in the finals.
