Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri on Saturday unveiled the trailer of his much-awaited film The Bengal Files, coinciding with Direct Action Day (August 16). The film, which explores Bengal’s turbulent history during and after Partition, is scheduled for theatrical release on September 5.
The trailer opens with powerful dialogues that set the tone for the narrative. One voice declares, “Yeh Pachim Bangal hai, yaha do constitution chalta hai—ek Hinduao ka, ek Musalmanon ka (This is West Bengal, where two constitutions prevail—one for Hindus and one for Muslims).” Another asserts, “Sirf zameen ka tukda nahi, Bharat ka light house hai Bangal (Bengal is not just land, it is Bharat’s lighthouse).”
The ensemble cast features veterans Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi, alongside Bengali actors Saswata Chatterjee and Sourav Das. The makers describe the film as “an exposé of the brutal Hindu genocide that mainstream narratives have long buried.”
Audience Reaction
The trailer has triggered strong reactions online, especially among Bengalis. Many praised Agnihotri for spotlighting a chapter of Indian history often overlooked in popular culture. “As an Indian Bengali, I am thankful that at least one filmmaker had the courage to bring this atrocity to light,” wrote one viewer. Another commented, “I had tears in my eyes watching the trailer. This story must be told.”
Cast and Crew Speak Out
Director Vivek Agnihotri called the film “a wake-up call” and said, “We launched the trailer in Kolkata to ensure authenticity. If Kashmir hurt you, Bengal will haunt you.”
Mithun Chakraborty added, “The Bengal Files is everything audiences never expected. For me, this is what cinema is meant for—telling stories that matter.”
