Odisha Vigilance on Tuesday apprehended Amarendra Satapathy, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Excise and In-Charge of Tangi Excise Station in Khordha district, for accepting a bribe of Rs. 8,000 from a licensed liquor vendor.
The arrest took place in a well-coordinated sting operation after the vendor reported Satapathy’s persistent harassment and demands for monthly bribes to allow his business to operate without interference.
According to Vigilance authorities, Satapathy had been extorting Rs. 8,000 monthly from the vendor, threatening legal action if the amount was not paid. Frustrated by the ongoing coercion, the vendor approached the Odisha Vigilance Department, prompting them to set up a trap.
This evening, Satapathy was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. The entire amount was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to Satapathy to investigate potential disproportionate assets.
A case has been registered against him under Bhubaneswar Vigilance PS Case No. 11/2025, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation is ongoing, the authorities said.
