The death toll of Odia workers in the Tamil Nadu ammonia gas leak tragedy rose to 15 after another injured worker succumbed during treatment.
The deceased, identified as 23-year-old Rohini Juang from Rebana village in the Harichandanpur area of Kendujhar district, had been undergoing treatment since the incident. Sources confirmed that four to five other injured workers remain hospitalised.
The mishap occurred on June 21 at a private seafood processing and export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. Around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand were on duty when ammonia gas leaked inside the factory.
Toxic fumes spread rapidly, causing breathing difficulties, dizziness, and severe eye irritation among workers. Several workers collapsed inside the premises and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Despite medical efforts, the death toll continues to rise, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
Families of the deceased and injured workers expressed grief and demanded accountability. The tragedy has intensified calls for stronger safety measures in industrial units employing migrant labourers.
