At least 12 people were killed and 11 others critically injured, including two police officers, in a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, Australian authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred as hundreds of people gathered for “Chanukah by the Sea,” an event marking the beginning of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Police have described the shooting as a suspected terrorist attack, stating that the gathering was deliberately targeted.

Attack at Popular Public Venue

According to officials, the attack triggered panic and chaos in the crowded beachfront area. Emergency services responded immediately, providing medical assistance to victims and evacuating civilians from the scene.

Police confirmed that one suspected attacker was shot dead during the response. A second suspect was critically injured and remains hospitalised under police guard. Investigators are working to determine whether additional individuals were involved and to establish the full sequence of events.

Police Officers Among the Injured

Two police officers sustained injuries while responding to the shooting. Authorities praised the swift and coordinated response of law enforcement and emergency personnel, which they said helped prevent further loss of life.

National Leaders Condemn Violence

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and deeply distressing,” offering condolences to the families of those killed and injured. He expressed solidarity with the Jewish community and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to standing against hate-driven violence.

“This act of violence does not represent who we are as a country,” the Prime Minister said, commending first responders for their courage under extreme circumstances.

Heightened Security Across Sydney

In the aftermath of the attack, security has been intensified across Sydney, particularly around religious institutions, public spaces, and major events. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as investigations continue.

The deadly shooting has left Australia in mourning, turning a moment of cultural celebration into a day of profound grief and reflection.
