Bhubaneswar witnessed another incident involving an SUV on Wednesday evening when the vehicle mounted a pavement and ran over a parked scooter along the Canal Road stretch under the Laxmisagar Police Station limits. The incident caused minor property damage but no injuries.
SUV Mounts Pavement, Damages Parked Scooter
According to eyewitnesses, a black Thar SUV was reportedly travelling at high speed when it veered onto the pavement and struck a scooter parked near a roadside shop. The rider had stepped away moments earlier, narrowly avoiding harm.
The impact caused significant damage to the two-wheeler, but no casualties were reported. Local residents gathered at the spot, expressing concern over repeated occurrences of reckless driving in the area.
Police Detain Driver, Begin Investigation
Laxmisagar Police responded promptly and detained the SUV driver for questioning. Officers confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to determine whether speeding, distraction, or violation of traffic rules contributed to the incident.
Authorities have sent the vehicle for inspection and are verifying documents and assessing road conditions at the time of the accident. Police have not yet released details regarding potential charges.
Growing Concern Over High-Speed SUVs in Bhubaneswar
The episode has reignited public concern regarding unsafe driving practices, especially involving high-powered SUVs in the capital city. Residents reported that poor enforcement and increasing traffic volume are contributing to rising accident risks on several busy corridors.
This latest case follows a tragic accident in Patrapada on August 9, where a Thar SUV was involved in a collision that resulted in the deaths of an eight-year-old girl and her mother during an alleged high-speed chase. That incident triggered widespread public outrage and led to licence suspensions and the arrest of the vehicle owner after an extensive 45-day search.
The current investigation is expected to provide clarity on the driver’s conduct and the circumstances leading to Wednesday’s incident.
