Team India survived a major scare in their final group-stage clash, defeating Oman by 21 runs to remain unbeaten and book a place in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025. While the close finish thrilled fans, what truly stole the spotlight was Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s heartwarming gesture towards the Omani players after the game.
India Clinch Hard-Fought Win
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India posted a competitive 188/8 in 20 overs. The innings got off to a shaky start with the early dismissal of Shubman Gill, but opener Abhishek Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking with a quickfire 38 off just 15 balls. Sanju Samson, batting at No. 3, took time to settle but anchored the innings with a well-crafted knock, keeping India on track despite regular fall of wickets at the other end.
The Indian batting lineup continued to play their aggressive brand of cricket, refusing to slow down despite losing wickets. Interestingly, captain Suryakumar Yadav did not get a chance to bat as India concluded their innings with a strong total.
Oman’s Spirited Fightback
Chasing 189, Oman began their innings confidently. Openers Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem put on a solid 56-run partnership, giving Oman genuine hope of pulling off the first major upset of the tournament. Hammad Mirza, coming in at No. 3, played with equal composure, and both he and Kaleem registered half-centuries to keep the game alive deep into the second innings.
Just when Oman seemed to be in control, Hardik Pandya turned the game in India’s favour. First, he took a stunning catch in the outfield to dismiss Kaleem (64 off 46), and then struck with the ball to remove Mirza (51 off 33). Oman eventually fell short, managing 167/4 in their 20 overs, handing India a narrow 21-run victory.
Surya’s Gesture of Sportsmanship
After the match, Suryakumar Yadav was seen surrounded by Omani players, engaging in a post-match discussion. He shared valuable tips on T20 strategy, addressing their queries on playing different phases of the game.
Oman skipper Jatinder Singh lauded the gesture during the post-match presentation, saying, “Surya spoke about the game and praised us, which means a lot. Our boys had questions on how to play in different phases of a T20 game. It was really nice to have a chat with him.”
The two teams also posed for photographs together, underlining the spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect that defined the contest.
India’s Next Challenge – Pakistan
With this win, India advance to the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025 and are set to face arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, September 15, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The high-voltage clash is expected to be a crucial test of India’s consistency as they look to continue their winning run and move closer to the trophy.
