The sacred Suna Besha (Golden Attire) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra will be observed on Saturday, with the sibling deities adorning magnificent gold ornaments while seated on their respective chariots outside the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
One of the most revered and visually spectacular rituals of the annual Rath Yatra, Suna Besha attracts lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad, who throng the holy city to witness the deities in their regal golden adornments before they re-enter the temple.
Lord Jagannath and siblings to wear traditional gold ornaments
During the ritual, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Sudarshan will be decorated with intricately crafted gold ornaments, symbolising divine majesty and royal splendour.
The deities will be adorned with sacred ornaments including Kirita (crown), Kundala (earrings), Ghagada Mali, Bahada Mali, Harida Mali, Kadamba Mali, Baghanakhi Mali, Sebati Mali, Hala Mushala, Chakra, Tilak and several other traditional ornaments, creating a breathtaking spiritual spectacle.
Suna Besha timings
According to the temple schedule, the Suna Besha ritual will begin at 5 pm and continue until 11 pm. After the completion of the darshan, the ornaments will be ceremonially removed during the Mailam ritual.
Temple officials said devotees may get an opportunity to witness the Golden Attire earlier in the afternoon if the preceding rituals conclude ahead of schedule.
Elaborate arrangements for devotees
Anticipating massive crowds, the Puri district administration has put in place extensive security and crowd-management measures.
Barricades have been installed from Market Chhak along the Bada Danda (Grand Road) to streamline the movement of devotees.
As per the traffic and crowd management plan:
- Devotees will enter through the left side of the Grand Road.
- They will offer prayers before the three chariots.
- After darshan, devotees will exit through the right side of the road.
Officials have appealed to pilgrims to follow the designated routes, cooperate with security personnel and adhere to administrative guidelines to ensure a safe and smooth darshan experience during one of the most significant rituals of the Rath Yatra 2026.
