A Class-III student died, and two others sustained critical injuries when a notice board collapsed at the Government Upgraded Residential School in Koraput district.
The tragic incident occurred under Kotpad police station limits while the children were brushing their teeth.
The deceased student, Premanand Bhatra, belonged to Sauniguda village under Gumuda panchayat. School authorities confirmed that the notice board suddenly fell, trapping the children underneath.
Medical staff at the Kotpad Community Health Centre provided immediate treatment to the injured students. As one child’s condition worsened, doctors shifted him to Jeypore Hospital for advanced care.
The incident shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about safety standards in residential schools. Parents and residents demanded accountability, urging authorities to ensure proper maintenance of school infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies.
Officials stated that an investigation has begun to determine how the notice board collapsed and whether negligence contributed to the accident. The district administration assured that strict action will follow based on the inquiry’s findings.
