The State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, honoured 30 women Suvahaks working with CRUT as Sarathi during a special event held in Bhubaneswar.
The event was graced by Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport Department, Usha Padhee, who interacted with the women drivers and lauded their role as torchbearers of road safety. The women Suvahaks shared their inspiring journeys, struggles, and achievements, making the event a heartwarming experience.
The Odisha government has set up free driving training centres in Chhatia, Palur, Keonjhar, and Bonai, where both men and women receive professional driver training. Many women have completed the training and established themselves as Suvahaks. This event was organised to recognize their efforts and boost their confidence.
Speaking at the occasion, Principal Secretary Usha Padhee said, “The journey of women Suvahaks is an inspiration for all. The government is taking various steps for women’s empowerment, and the Suvahak scheme is a key initiative in this regard. It not only provides driver training but also creates employment opportunities. Women Suvahaks will play a crucial role in Road Safety. The government is also working towards increasing women’s participation in public transport services like ‘Ama Bus’ and ‘Mukhyamantri Bus Seva.’ Additionally, efforts are to facilitate easy loans for women drivers to own their vehicles and become self-reliant.”
During the event, the women Suvahaks expressed their gratitude and shared how driving was once considered a male-dominated skill but has now transformed into an inclusive profession, thanks to government initiatives.
The program was held at the CRUT Gadakana EV Bus Depot and was attended by Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur, CRUT MD N. Tirumala Naik, STA Secretary Chinmayi Bishwal, among others. STA Accounts Officer Madhusmita Behera delivered the vote of thanks.
