Mumbai: The BCCI selection committee has announced India’s squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka on Thursday, July 18.
Suryakumar Yadav is set to lead as India’s new T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the shortest format after the T20 World Cup 2024 victory last month.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of the ODI squad as India begins early preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy next year. Notably, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer make their return to white-ball cricket for the first time in 2024.
Shubman Gill, who captained India to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe in recent T20Is, has been named vice-captain of both T20 and ODI squads for the series against Sri Lanka. Although Hardik Pandya, the star all-rounder, was Rohit’s deputy in the T20 World Cup 2024 and last year’s ODI World Cup and is expected to assume leadership, he has been included in the T20I squad but omitted from the ODIs against Sri Lanka.
Despite his sensational 46-ball century in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, young opener Abhishek Sharma has been excluded from the team. Ruturaj Gaikwad is also absent from the squad despite his notable performances against Zimbabwe.
Senior players Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Axar Patel are back in the T20I setup. However, Jasprit Bumrah, the ace pacer and Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 World Cup 2024, is not included in either white-ball team.
Harshit Rana, the 22-year-old Delhi pacer, and batting all-rounder Riyan Parag have been called up to India’s ODI squad for the first time. Parag, who debuted internationally in the recent T20Is against Zimbabwe, has retained his place over Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma.
