The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 27, signalling the start of India’s crucial rainy season.
This annual climatic transition is vital for agriculture, water resource planning, and relief from the scorching summer heat.
Traditionally, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1, but variations occur due to multiple meteorological factors. IMD employs a state-of-the-art statistical model with a ±4-day margin of error, leveraging six key predictors, including pre-monsoon rainfall, temperature trends, and atmospheric conditions.
The monsoon’s northward progression will gradually bring relief to central and northern regions, significantly impacting the agriculture sector, which depends heavily on timely rainfall. Experts suggest that monsoon arrival dates play a crucial role in determining crop cycles and food security.
The IMD will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates on further advancements of the southwest monsoon across India.
