Ahead of the upcoming Danda Yatra festival, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF), Berhampur Circle, has directed all Divisional Forest Officers to take strict action against the use of snakes and other wildlife during cultural performances.

The circular, issued on February 10, highlights that some drama committees use reptiles, especially snakes, during stage plays and social dramas organised as part of the festival. The RCCF noted that such practices violate the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and BNS 2023.

Forest officers have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance and initiate legal proceedings against violators. The directive also calls for awareness campaigns in villages and coordination with district collectors and police officials to educate organisers and prevent the use of animals in performances.

The circular specifically mentions that violations of Sections 9, 43, 44, 48, and 49 of the Wildlife Protection Act, along with penalties under Section 51, Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and Section 325 of BNS 2023, will apply to offenders.

Authorities emphasised that cultural traditions must not compromise wildlife protection or animal welfare. The move seeks to ensure that Danda Yatra celebrations remain vibrant while adhering to legal and ethical standards.
