A new chapter in tiger conservation begins as the tiger census kicks off at Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR), part of the nationwide tiger monitoring initiative.
Employing advanced methods such as AI-equipped cameras and scat analysis, eight teams comprising 85 dedicated staff have been deployed to ensure accurate counting.
According to the previous 2022 report, STR is home to 24 adult tigers and 8 cubs. This census aims to confirm whether the population remains stable, increases, or faces challenges. Over 300 trap cameras have been installed across the reserve to track movements and behaviours.
Special attention is being given to two tigresses relocated from Maharashtra last year, named “Zeenat” and “Jamuna.” While their adaptation remains a work in progress, authorities are closely monitoring their future to address genetic diversity and behavioural concerns.
The census report is slated for release in 2026, marking a significant milestone in understanding and managing India’s tiger population, critical for biodiversity conservation.
