A special team from the Odisha government has reached Sikkim to assist victims of the tragic tourist vehicle accident that occurred in North Sikkim’s Mangan district.

Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, two senior officials from the state’s transport department—Additional Transport Commissioner Dipti Ranjan Patra and Joint Transport Commissioner Bikash Chaudhary—arrived in Gangtok to assess the situation and provide necessary support.

The accident, which took place near Chubombu, involved a vehicle carrying 11 tourists, including six Odia travellers. The vehicle reportedly skidded off the road and plunged thousands of feet into the Teesta River. Among the victims was the BJP Mahila Morcha’s state secretary, Itishree Jena, along with her family members.

Rescue teams have successfully recovered two minors, Sairaj Jena and Swoyam Supratim Nayak, who were found in critical condition and are now receiving treatment at Gangtok Hospital. However, four other Odia tourists, including Jena, remain missing. Authorities continue their search operation despite challenging terrain and strong river currents.

Officials from Odisha have visited the hospital, spoken with the injured survivors, and assured all possible assistance. The state transport department has stated that efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individuals and repatriate the rescued victims safely.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Odisha, with prayers and hopes for the safe return of those still unaccounted for. Further updates on the rescue operation are awaited.
