The sensational murder case of Bhubaneswar woman traffic constable Shubhamitra Sahu has taken a dramatic twist as the prime accused Deepak Rout appeared before the Athagarh court today.
Police revealed that, along with Shubhamitra’s killing, the suspicious death of Deepak’s first wife, Aparna Priyadarshini, has now been registered as a murder case. Khuntuni police produced Deepak in court after bringing him from Bhubaneswar, and investigators placed him on daily remand. Plans are underway to conduct a lie detection test.
Earlier, Aparna’s death was considered accidental. However, during the probe into Shubhamitra’s murder, investigators suspected foul play. Deepak reportedly disclosed shocking details during interrogation.
In September 2025, Shubhamitra’s body was recovered from a Keonjhar forest. Investigations revealed that Deepak was her secret husband. Police alleged that he strangled her over disputes involving money and insurance claims, later burying the body in the forest. Shubhamitra had a ₹1 crore insurance policy in her name.
In December 2025, police filed a 700-page chargesheet naming Deepak as the prime accused. During further investigation, Aparna’s death also appeared suspicious. Her family had earlier alleged murder. As a result, Khuntuni police registered a fresh case, declaring it a red-flag case.
Sources confirmed that Deepak received nearly Rs 1.25 crore in insurance money after Aparna’s death. He admitted that disputes over this money triggered conflicts with Shubhamitra.
Following his court appearance, Deepak will face extended interrogation under remand. Crime Branch has intensified investigations into both cases. Aparna’s family demanded justice and strict punishment for Deepak.
