The Jagatsinghpur district administration has announced the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday, July 27, following an India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall triggered by a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal.
In an official order, the Collector and District Magistrate directed that all government, aided, and private schools — including Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Anganwadi centres — remain closed to ensure student safety.
The IMD reported that the well‑marked low‑pressure area intensified into a depression at 8:30 am on Sunday, centred near 20.6° N and 88.4° E, about 170 km east of Chandbali and 180 km east‑southeast of Balasore. The system is expected to strengthen into a deep depression and cross the north Odisha–West Bengal coast between Paradip and Sagar Island around July 27 noon.
Under its influence, Odisha is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy spells over the next 48 hours. Jagatsinghpur has already recorded intense showers, with Biridi logging 328 mm, the highest in the state, while Yuyumura in Sambalpur received 275.4 mm.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow official advisories. Emergency response teams are on alert to tackle rain‑related incidents as the depression approaches landfall.
