The Supreme Court of India will hear the Odisha government’s plea tomorrow seeking modification of its earlier order on the release of the animated film Mahaprabhu Jagannath.
The State has argued that the film portrays Lord Jagannath “in a cartoon form”, raising concerns over cultural sensitivity and religious sentiments. The matter will be heard by a bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan.
The plea comes after the apex court had previously restrained the release of the film until the completion of the Rath Yatra festival, following petitions that alleged distortion of Jagannath’s traditions and rituals.
Odisha’s latest move underscores its demand for stricter scrutiny of the film’s content, citing potential misrepresentation of the revered deity. The court is expected to take up the matter tomorrow for further consideration.
