Sanju Samson produced a career-defining performance with an unbeaten 97 that powered India past the West Indies’ 196-run target in 19.2 overs and secured a semifinal berth in the T20 World Cup.
Samson’s innings eclipsed Virat Kohli’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup run chase. Kohli’s unbeaten 82s against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022 had previously stood as benchmarks.
The Rajasthan Royals captain struck 12 fours and four sixes in his 50-ball knock, guiding India to a five-wicket victory with four balls remaining. His composure under pressure drew praise from India skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who messaged him, “Good things happen to those who wait.”
Samson admitted that doubts crept into his mind during the chase, but he focused on reacting to each ball on merit. He credited his learning from legends like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni for shaping his approach. “I have seen how the greatest players finish games and change their approach according to the situation,” he said.
His 97 not out now stands as the second-highest individual score for India in T20 World Cup history, behind Suresh Raina’s 101 against South Africa in 2010. Samson described the innings as “one of the best days of his life,” marking a turning point in his international career.
