From a humble backyard range to the world’s grandest shooting arenas, Samrat Rana’s journey is a portrait of determination, family devotion, and unyielding belief.
The 23-year-old shooter etched his name in Indian sporting history by winning gold in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Championships 2025 in Cairo on Monday — becoming the first Indian ever to claim a senior individual world title in an Olympic pistol category.
A day later, he partnered with Esha Singh to secure silver in the mixed team event, marking a golden chapter for Indian shooting.
Behind Samrat’s triumph lies a story deeply rooted in love, sacrifice, and perseverance. His father, Ashok Rana, built a modest shooting setup in their backyard when his son was just a toddler. That small patch of land became the foundation of a world champion.
“I was three when my father first took me to a shooting range,” Samrat told Olympics.com. “Since then, the sound of a shot hitting the target has been music to me.”
While other children played in parks, Samrat spent hours perfecting his aim under his father’s watchful eye. His mother provided the emotional backbone — offering quiet strength through moments of victory and doubt alike.
“Dad gave me everything I needed as a shooter,” Samrat says with a smile. “But it was my mother who kept me strong mentally. She never let me lose focus.”
Samrat’s early years were marked by steady progress — from winning his first car at the National Open Championship in Faridabad (2019) to clinching silver at the Khelo India Games. Yet the true turning point came when he realized his family’s sacrifices deserved the ultimate recognition: an Olympic medal.
“It’s my biggest dream,” he admits. “I want to win it for them. They’ve been the livewires of my success.”
Even as he prepares for the ISSF World Cup Final in Doha, Samrat continues to train from home rather than elite academies.
“Home is the best place,” he says. “Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned here — with my father by my side.”
His gold in Cairo not only validated his talent but also celebrated his father’s innovative coaching philosophy — built on improvisation, patience, and a belief that greatness can grow from the humblest of places.
For Samrat, every shot fired is a tribute — to the backyard that nurtured his dreams, to his mother’s quiet resilience, and to his father’s unshakeable faith.
“Learn from failures, never look back, and always move forward with a positive mind,” he says — a message that echoes far beyond the shooting range.
In the story of Samrat Rana, every shot carries not just precision, but the pulse of a family that believed long before the world took notice.
