In a significant crackdown, the Raghunathpali police in Rourkela seized a van loaded with illegal explosives on Saturday, detaining the driver and the warehouse owner for interrogation.
The operation unfolded after authorities intercepted two vans suspected of illegally transporting explosive materials. While one van was released after verification of valid documents, the second vehicle, carrying 116 boxes containing 23,200 sticks of gelatin and detonators, was confiscated.
The seized van is believed to have originated from an explosives warehouse located in the Itima jungle under the Badagaon police station jurisdiction. Sources indicate that the consignment was en route to the Balanda mining area, raising serious concerns about the security and oversight of explosive materials in the region. Just last Tuesday, a similar shipment from the same warehouse, intended for the Banko mines under Balangir police station, was looted, prompting police to seal the facility. Despite this, the illegal transport of explosives continued, baffling authorities and triggering an in-depth investigation.
The detained individuals, identified as the van driver, Birsa Samad, and the warehouse owner, Shravan Agrawal, are currently under police custody for questioning. Preliminary findings confirm that the transportation of the explosives violated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), heightening suspicions of negligence or complicity. “We are investigating how these materials were moved from a sealed warehouse,” a senior official from Raghunathpali police station stated. “The breach of protocol is evident, and we are determined to uncover the full extent of this operation.”
The incident follows a recent looting of explosives from the same warehouse, which had already raised red flags about the security of such sensitive materials. The Itima jungle warehouse, meant to store explosives under strict regulations, was sealed after the earlier incident. Yet, the movement of 23,200 gelatin sticks and detonators to the Balanda mining area has exposed potential loopholes in enforcement and oversight.
Police are now probing the circumstances surrounding the breach, including how the sealed warehouse was accessed and whether internal collusion or external forces were involved. The illegal transport of explosives poses a grave threat to public safety, especially in a region with active mining operations where such materials are often misused if not properly regulated.
Authorities have assured a thorough investigation, with a focus on ensuring compliance with safety protocols and preventing future incidents. The case has sparked concerns among locals and industry experts, who are calling for stricter regulations and accountability in the handling and transport of explosives.
